cat-urinary-tract-infectionWelcome to Cat Urinary Tract Infection! Cat bladder infections or urinary tract infections (UTI’s) are a common, usually reoccurring problem in felines. This type of infection is more commonly seen in male cats – both neutered and un-neutered, but can also have an effect on the health of female cats too. In almost all cases, the signs of a UTI remain unnoticed from their owners because the cats tend to disguise signs of pain and discomfort. However if left untreated, a cat urinary tract infection can lead to the stoppage and complete destruction of the urinary tract leading to permanent damage or death.

Cat Urinary Tract Infection Causes:

Diet – Choose food with low levels of magnesium.
Environment – Keep the litter box clean and fresh water supplies.
Stress – Exposure to stressful changes can increase risk factors.
Gender – Male cats have a higher chance of developing a UTI.
Age – Older cats have a higher risk of developing urinary tract infection.
Urolithiasis -The formation of kidney stones in the urinary tract.

Cat Urinary Tract Infection Symptoms:

Urinating outside the litter box – Cats with UTI’s tend to urinate in cooler areas of the home.
Yowling or excessive crying when using the litter box or during urination
Straining to urinate
Bloody urine
Strong urine smell
Excessive thirst
Excessive licking of the bladder area
Redness or irritation of the bladder area
Inactivity

It is important to have a vet test for a UTI if you are seeing any of these symptons. The earlier you attack the UTI the better health for your cat.
